Past snowboard cross winners, Olympic medallists among Canucks at Winter X

Past snowboard cross winners Drew Neilson and Maelle Ricker, plus Olympic bronze medallist Dominique Maltais are among the Canadians will who compete at this year's Winter X Games, which begin Thursday in Aspen, Colo.

Blair Morgan of Prince Albert, Sask., a seven-time winner in past X Games, will lead a strong Canadian contingent in the snowmobile snocross, which also includes Ryan Simons, of Camrose, Alta., who was second last year.

A record US$1-million purse will be up for grabs at this year's event, which will draw over 250 of the world's best skiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers. The competition ends Sunday.

Ricker of Whistler, B.C., is a four-time snowboard cross winner at Winter X and also will compete in the halfpipe. Neilson, of North Vancouver, B.C., won the Winter X snowboard cross in 2000 and last year took the overall World Cup title.

Maltais, of Petite-Riviere-St-Francois, Que., took the bronze medal at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy, where snowboard cross made its Olympic debut. This will be her first Winter X Games, but at five-foot-11 and 160 pounds she is one of the most imposing figures in the field.
