Football
#1
You americans may call it soccer but you are wrong, it is F-O-O-T-B-A-L-L.

Anyway, the football season is starting again soon. I think either Arsenal or Chelsea will win the Premiership and Chippenham will get promoted. Cool

As for the Champion's League Panathaikos will win.

So, what does everyone else think?

well, the word "soccer" comes from "assoc" which is an abreviation of Association Football and was first used in the UK!

and it's "fitba" not football anyway. Wink

I have no idea about the English leagues but I support West Ham and Rangers.

Quote:It seems it was the practice amonst the well bred students of Oxford to
abbreviate words whilst adding "er" to the end; "brekkers" for
breakfast for example.

On asked if he wanted to play "rugger" (i.e. the "rugby rules") a
student replied "no, soccer", an abbreviation of "association", or the
"association rules", i.e. the rules of the Football Association in
London.

So we have the posh people to blame then. Rolleyes

you guys, aside from the fact that IMO I think it should be called soccer...there's no right or wrong way to say it, it's "football" in England as it rightly should be, but it's "soccer" in the U.S...if it was football that would become too confusing here, and Englanders have always called it football so why change? how can we be wrong calling it what we've always called it, and vice versa? give it a break already :undecided .....
